Your electric provider is determined by where your property is located within Iowa's established electric service territories. It may not be the same company that provides your natural gas service.
Consumers Energy Cooperative provides electric service in portions of five counties in central Iowa: Marshall, Jasper, Tama, Polk, & Story. This includes several communities and surrounding areas including portions of Ankeny, Marshalltown, and Ames. Because electric service territories do not necessarily follow city limits, two nearby properties may have different electric providers.
If you are moving, don't assume that setting up natural gas service also establishes your electric service.
Not sure who provides electricity at your address? Use the Iowa Utilities Commission Electric Service Area Boundary Map to search your address and identify the electric utility serving your location.
If the map shows Consumers Energy Cooperative, contact us at 800-696-6552 or visit our Start/Stop Service page to establish electric service.
Important: If you receive a notice from Consumers Energy at a property where you have recently moved and you have not established an account with us, please contact us. The notice may be legitimate even if you already established service with another utility for natural gas or another service.
